Favorite Titles

“You may have tangible wealth untold: Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold. Richer than I you can never be – I had a mother who read to me.”
-Strickland Gillian, ‘The Reading Mother”

We are always knee-deep in (well-chewed) books around here.  I thought I'd pull a few favorites off the shelf to share.

Two favorites both come from Barefoot Books:

Other current favorites are by Peter Sis.  The little boy is named Matt, so these books are clearly meant to live at our house!  These books capture the imagination of a little boy just perfectly.

While we were on our camping trip in Michigan, we happened upon a wonderful bookshop in Cheboygan called Log Marks Bookstore.  Matias picked out a signed copy of a new local book about Mackinac Island by Jennifer Margaret Powell.  It is a counting book, and it even has pictures of "our" carriage horses, Sunny and Stormy (or at least Matias thinks so!).

{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

From garden to table!

A week of steady rain did our garden good...and we were able to enjoy our first homegrown salad last night!  Radishes, Swiss chard, lettuce and beets are all ready to go...the corn has grown taller than the fence, and the tomatoes have sprung to life after a slow start.  We are also expecting our first CSA share on Wednesday, so we should have our fill of fresh veggies this summer!

Full Moon Jam

Last Thursday evening we traveled into Chicago to celebrate the full moon along Lake Michigan with the fire spinners.  We started with a picnic by Foster beach, where we enjoyed homemade bread, cheese, cookies and beautiful sunset colors in the sky.

We then walked back down along the lake to hear the drummers (and one random saxophone player!) and see the firespinners work their magic. It was mesmerizing and well worth the late bedtime!! Violet especially liked the drums, and Matias has been talking about the firespinners all week!
